Richard was admitted as a solicitor in 1984 and has specialised in civil litigation throughout his career. He trained in the civil litigation department of Shakespeares Solicitors, Birmingham, joined Hulme & Co Solicitors, Worcester, upon qualification, and became litigation partner at that firm in 1986.

He was appointed a Deputy District Judge (High Court and County Court) in 2001, and continues to sit part-time as a Civil Court Judge, principally in Birmingham. He has lectured on contract law for Worcester Law School, in recognition of which he was made an Honorary Fellow of Staffordshire University in 2004. He has also broadcast regularly on legal issues for BBC Hereford and Worcester radio.

In 2004 Richard joined Harrison Clark to develop the Property Litigation Department, acting for commercial landlords and tenants, businesses and individuals in a variety of property disputes and cases. In 2005 Richard established a specialist Commercial and Property Litigation department within the firm's Business Services Division, serving the firm's business clients in relation to a wide range of commercial cases, including breach of warranty and covenant claims arising out of asset and share sales agreements, shareholder and partnership disputes, breach of contract and negligence claims, and director's duty and liability claims.

In 1999, Richard trained as a mediator with ADR Group, and is frequently involved in mediation and other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
